Ø Govt to announce 3G, Wimax guidelines soon      (Mint)
The government said on 4 July guidelines on 3G and Wimax will be out in a week and it is separately looking at third party solution to address security concerns attached to accessing Blackberry network."Broad guidelines for 3G have been devised and they need some inputs from the Finance Ministry.He said consultations with the Finance Ministry are necessary as the ministry has a say in the Telecom Commission, the policy-making wing of the Department of Telecom.

Ø CDMA companies want rivals to pay for 'excess' spectrum          (ET)
After a lull, the spectrum wars between GSM and CDMA players are set to kick off again. CDMA operators, through their industry body—Association of Unified Service Providers of India (AUSPI)—have made presentations to the finance ministry and communications ministry and have also approached the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and sector regulator TRAI demanding that GSM players be charged Rs 1,312 Crore per MHz for all radio frequencies they hold in excess of 4.4 MHz.

The Anil Ambani group on 4 July asked the market regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to probe hammering down of shares of Reliance Communications and other companies by rivals and charged Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) with attempting to derail ongoing talks for a deal with South African telecom giant MTN.

Ø RCom plans to raise $5 bn for MTN deal                                    (ET)
Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications (RCOM) is in talks to raise up to $5-6 billion from banks to part-finance its planned acquisition of the South African telco MTN. RCOM may pledge the shares of MTN to raise the funds and also provide some sort of guarantee to the lenders.Sources in the know said Deustsche Bank, HSBC and Barclays, among others, are putting in place short-term financing for RCOM to finance the deal.

Ø Nortel in talks with Indian telcos for 4G                               (HBL)
Even as the entire Indian telecom industry is waiting for the final policy for launching third generation mobile services, Canada-based technology firm Nortel is in talks with operators to leap from directly from the existing cellular services to deploy fourth generation technology. Nortel, which had earlier sold off its third generation business unit, is gearing up make available its first trials of its Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in India by the end of the year.

Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries (RIL) on Thursday shot off another letter to Reliance Communications (RCOM), the telecommunications company run by brother Anil Ambani, invoking a right of first refusal (RoFR). A copy of the letter was also sent to South African telco MTN with which RCOM is negotiating a deal, the exact contours of which are not yet clear.

Ø Nu Tek earmarks Rs 20 cr for acquisitions                            (ET)
Gurgaon-based telecom infrastructure service provider Nu Tek India plans to invest Rs 20 crore for acquisition of companies operating in a similar space in the overseas market."We intend to increase our presence in new geographies by acquiring companies. We have identified a few US companies with operations in the Middle-East and North Africa and we will seal the deals very soon," the company's Managing Director Inder Sharma told PTI here.

Chip-maker Intel Corp. plans to roll out a new processor platform, dubbed Menlow, with wireless capabilities built around the so-called Wimax standard as part of its push towards cheaper and better performing mobile Internet devices."The aim is to combine the form factor of a device like the iPhone, and using Intel's Atom processor, deliver the processing power of an ultra-mobile laptop," said Siavash M. Alamouti, CTO, at Intel's wireless mobility group.

Ø Vodafone to Extend 3G Network to 97% of New Zealand              (C-N)
Vodafone New Zealand Friday said it will extend its third generation mobile network to cover 97% of the population, taking total spending on 3G infrastructure investment to NZ$500 million.The local unit of U.K.-based Vodafone PLC said its advanced mobile network would cover 97% of the places New Zealanders live and work in by 2010, up from the 63% coverage currently.

According to Indian Cellular Association (ICA), the share of the grey mobile handset market came down from 60% in 2006 to just 10% in 2007.
